Drunk driver kills passenger near Beachwood

On Tuesday, April 6, a Barnegat man riding as the passenger in a vehicle fleeing from the police was killed after the vehicle crashed into two trees. The driver fled from police after an officer attempted to pull him over. The 26-year-old passenger was killed instantly while the 32-year-old driver suffered only minor injuries.
According to police reports, an officer clocked the driver at 88 mph in the area of Route 9 and Mizzen Avenue, but the driver refused to pull over after the officer attempted to stop him. The driver then headed west on Mizzen Avenue into Beachwood before the accident occurred.
The driver has been charged with vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, as well as a number of other crimes. His bail has been set at $100,00. Early investigation indicates that the men had met recently at a party.
