A 19-year-old Belmar woman who was struck by a NJ Transit station train in July 2006 has been awarded a $1.2 million settlement.

The girl was 16 at the time of the accident. After she and a number of other passengers stepped off of a southbound train, they began to cross the train tracks. A northbound train struck the girl, who was in front of the other passengers, breaking her arm and leg.

Shortly thereafter, NJ Transit modified signs at train stations across the state to more clearly direct passengers to use the crossing gates when attempting to cross the train tracks.

Witnesses to the accident say that the girl was behind the crossing gate when she was struck.

Hillsdale police were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash around 3:18 p.m. Tuesday.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the 18-year-driver of the vehicle was speeding along Oak Trail Road when he rounded a curve too quickly and was forced to slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a wood chipper.
