One injured in New Jersey garage collapse

Posted on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010 at 12:43 pm

The parking garage at a high-rise apartment complex in New Jersey collapsed leaving one person trapped inside as emergency responders worked to rescue the victim.

There were reports that more than one person were trapped inside, but officials have not had any other missing people. A glass and steal canopy that was on top of the garage to protect it, fell leaving at least two floors of the garage trapped.

Responders had to work carefully in order to prevent another part of the garage from collapsing. Emergency workers said that the work was slow and hard labor and fortunately, the victim was located during the rescue process.

New Jersey internist awarded $7.2 million

Posted on Friday, May 28th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

A Manhattan gynecologist who lives in Jersey City has been awarded $7.2 million for a broken elbow she suffered when she slipped on a rubber mat in a PATH station.

The jury found that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was 75 percent liable and the company that manages the station, Modern Facilities Services of East Hanover, was 25 percent liable. A Port Authority spokesman, when asked for a statement, said that the organization did not wish to comment on whether or not they would appeal the verdict.

The decision was made after the woman’s lawyer convinced the jury that the doctor was unable to practice medicine as she had before and was forced to send away patients to other doctors. He said that the injury, which the doctor suffered after falling on her right arm, took an immediate six hour surgery to stabilize with screws and wiring.

Bicyclist dragged under SUV

Posted on Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 12:29 pm

A 28-year-old woman is listed in good condition at Morristown Memorial Hospital after an SUV hit her and dragged her about 30 feet Tuesday morning in Madison, N.J., authorities said. Reports say the bicyclist suffered some scrapes in addition to a broken leg. Rescue personnel had to raise the vehicle to extricate the woman, because she was trapped under the vehicle’s tire.

Reports say the cyclist stopped at an intersection the same time as the SUV attempted to turn right. After the collision, instead of hitting the brakes, the driver hit the accelerator, authorities said, causing the woman to be dragged along the road. Police said the woman driving the SUV never saw the cyclist.
