N.J. police have statewide anti-drunk driving campaign

New Jersey is having a statewide crackdown on drunken drivers in a campaign called “Over the Limit, Under Arrest.”

The campaign begins August 26 and runs through September 6, Labor Day. The campaign is complete with extra law enforcement officials and sobriety checkpoints in order to keep an extra eye out for impaired drivers on the road.

Last year, 185 people were killed in alcohol-related accidents in New Jersey and 67 of these fatalities occurred during the Summer travel months.

Man turns himself in after NJ hit-and-run accident

A man has turned himself in after a hit-and-run pedestrian accident in New Jersey.

The 26-year-old man of Saylorsburg was traveling on Route 519 when he struck the 15-year-old pedestrian and then fled the scene.

The man has been charged with tampering with evidence, assault by leaving the scene of an accident where bodily injury occurred, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident. He was arrested and released on a $50,000 bail. The investigation into the incident is underway.

New Jersey athlete convicted in drunk driving crash

Professional soccer player, Matt Maher,  was convicted in  a fatal drunk driving accident and now wants to speak to students about the dangers of drinking and driving.

The accident occurred in March 2009 and left on man dead. Maher was responsible for the accident and he was sentenced to 5 and a half years in prison because after using a plea agreement.

Before his prison sentence, he began speaking to students and he visited 34 high schools and colleges in New Jersey during the time period. The South Jersey Traffic Alliance is now asking the correctional department to allow Maher to speak to more students about his compelling and life changing story. In this deal, Maher would be allow to speak until he has 24 moths left of his sentence.

Fatal Howell car crash still under investigation

Police officials continue to investigate a car accident that killed a Howell High School football player and injured two of his team mates in late July.

The accident occurred as one of the injured teens in the crash was driving a 2009 Mercedes Benz when his car left the road for unknown reasons and the car ran into a home.

Police officials believe that the driver failed to stop at a stop sign. The two team mates suffered non-life threatening injuries, but the third teen was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency officials.

Man killed in New Jersey car accident

A man from West Virginia was killed in a New Jersey car accident after he was accidentally ran over by his own vehicle.

The accident occurred in a parking lot of a New Jersey business center around 3 p.m. when the 73-year-old man stepped out of his vehicle. Another driver then told him that his car was still moving.

He then tried to get back into the vehicle in order to put it into park and turn it off. The car door then knocked him down to the ground and the car hit him. Emergency crews pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Three-car crash on the NJ Turnpike kills one woman

A New York woman was killed in a three-car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The 28-year-old was the passenger in a vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike when traffic began to slow. A Ford Explorer than rear-ended her Honda Civic causing it to spin before striking another vehicle.

The Honda finally came to a stop after it crashed into a concrete barrier. The woman was transported to the hospital,but later died there from the injuries sustained in the accident. The back seat passenger of the accident was also injured in the accident. Further details remain under investigation.

One injured in New Jersey garage collapse

The parking garage at a high-rise apartment complex in New Jersey collapsed leaving one person trapped inside as emergency responders worked to rescue the victim.

There were reports that more than one person were trapped inside, but officials have not had any other missing people. A glass and steal canopy that was on top of the garage to protect it, fell leaving at least two floors of the garage trapped.

Responders had to work carefully in order to prevent another part of the garage from collapsing. Emergency workers said that the work was slow and hard labor and fortunately, the victim was located during the rescue process.

Motorcycle collision kills one

According to New Jersey authorities, two motorcycles crashed on Interstate 78 leaving one woman dead.

Both motorcycles were traveling eastbound on the interstate a when one of the motorcycles struck the other one  as it was trying to pass it. A couple was riding on the motorcycle in front when it was hit.

The passenger on the motorcycle was thrown from the vehicle and was run over by another car. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of this motorcycle and the driver of the other motorcycle were both transported to the hospital. The 36-year-old driver of the second motorcycle was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Man faces charges after boating accident

One man was killed and two other injured in a boating accident near the Statue of Liberty. The driver of the other boat that caused the collision now faces charges of vehicular homicide and operating a boat while under the influence.

In New Jersey, the blood-alcohol limit for driving a car or boat is .o8. If a person is caught drinking and operating a boat, they could not only lose their driving privileges on a boat, but also their driving privileges in a car. The accident occurred when the victim’s boat was struck by a 30-foot boat operated by the man who was charged.

Man killed while trying to assist in accident

A New Jersey man was killed after being struck by a vehicle while trying to help a person that was involved in one-vehicle accident, according to New Jersey authorities.

The accident occurred on Interstate 280 around 11:45 a.m. when a 37-year-old man approached a vehicle that had just got into an accident after colliding with the median.

The car was disabled in the middle of the roadway so the man tried to offer some assistance, but he was struck by a vehicle that was trying to get out of the path of the car. The accident is currently under investigation.
